Tom Lüneburger was born on January 14, 1973 in Potsdam-Babelsberg. Since he was two years old, he lived in East-Berlin. After his father, also a musician and always supporting his son’s musical ambitions – had left the GDR, Tom moved to West-Berlin. Having experienced about 23 moves he spent the major part of his youth near Freiburg/south germany. At the age of 22, he returned to Berlin and took his first serious musical steps, influenced by many records of his father’s collection.
Tom met Stoffel and Ben, the three of them formed the band myballoon which won the Emergenza Competition in 1999 and the following European Finals. A label contract was signed with Turbobeat/BMG and in 2000 the first LP “Perfect View” appeared, including the radio hit “On my way”. Numerous TV appearances, promotion dates and concerts followed – among them were concerts in Austin, Texas, New York City and in the legendary “Whiskey a Gogo” in Los Angeles, concerts at festivals in Germany and as support for the Guano Apes’ European tour in Italy, Portugal, Switzerland and Czech Republic.
After the second LP “Between here and away” (2003, Gun Records/BMG), myballoon broke up in 2006 – for miscellaneous reasons, but in a friendly manner. Tom remained musically active, finding a new, an own path. Many intense and authentic songs were created, emotional songs about being dissatisfied with one’s situation, about finding new courage, mastering one’s own fate, believing in oneself and starting anew.
To these great songs an incredible voice is added – a voice that even fascinates fans of other genres. This happened at a Christmas concert in 2007 in Berlin’s “Postbahnhof”. Tom was to play before the performance of the Donots and Elke, two German rock acts. He started to sing and the audience suddenly fell silent and listened with rapt attention.
His first solo album will be released in January 2010. It will be a brave album with a strong emphasis on the vocals. Whoever will take this record home after a concert gets the same he has seen and heard – pure Tom Lüneburger.
Whether solely with guitar and vocals or with additional piano, bass and drums, Tom creates an atmosphere which is hard to evade. Tom Lüneburger is one of the best singers that Berlin has to offer and a singer who does not have to be afraid of international comparison.
